Description of the 365 Project
Well, I got through the first month of this project and I haven't run out of ideas yet. I would love some feedback from all of you readers/listeners out there. If there is a specific type of variation you would like to hear, I might just be open to taking requests. Cheers!

Remembrance: Variation 27 (28/365)
Description of the 365 Project
I suppose this one requires a little explanation. Much to my chagrin, my mom was a huge fan of Josh Groban. She adored him. She had every one of his albums and DVDs (I might have been guilty of gifting a couple of those). She watched his specials on TV whenever she got the chance. So, I decided to do a little variation that one might consider an echo of Josh Groban, as I am certainly not saying that I sound like him. This is also likely the closest I will ever come to singing anywhere other than the shower. Quiet. Tons of reverb. You'd be thanking me if you had heard the raw recording without effects.

Remembrance: Variation 16 (17/365)
Description of the 365 Project
As I wander through these variations, I find myself drifting from the original message and beauty of the music and lyrics. I suppose that's only natural when attempting to write 364 variations. However, I do want to consciously return to the simplicity of "Let There Be Peace on Earth" throughout this year of reflection & remembrance.
(Mom with my sister Heather)
Today, I have combined our theme of peace with that of grace and thankfulness by using the tune "Amazing Grace." I had never really paid close attention to the lyrics of this popular tune until now and realized how poignantly they reflect some of the challenges faced by my mother. Here are a few of the verses:
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

Remembrance: Variation 13 (14/365)
Description of the 365 Project
I have always been a fan of the music of John Williams – especially his work on the Star Wars movies. He has created some of the most memorable and recognizable themes in the history of cinema (think about Star Wars, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, etc.). So, it was only a matter of time that I borrowed from him for one of these variations (and it may not be the last time).
See if you can spot this one.

Remembrance: Variation 2 (3/365)
Description of the Project
I'm writing from the beach in Emerald Isle, NC this morning - one of my mom's favorite places to visit. My sister, nieces and I got up early this morning to see the sunrise, followed by a nice jog along the beach. Since I composed these variations before getting leaving for the coast, I had actually selected a different one to post today. However, after such a beautiful and peaceful morning, I changed my mind (you'll understand when you hear Variation 3 tomorrow).

Remembrance: A 365 Project (1/365)
I, like millions of others, have set some goals (or resolutions if you prefer) for 2009 - some small, some big. Things like switching from my morning Starbucks vanilla latte to hot green tea, completing all of my unfinished composition projects (there are several), practicing more, running my 2nd half marathon in the spring, and running my first full marathon in the fall. I've also come to realize that I have sorely neglected my blog, so I'm starting a new 365 project.
It is titled "Remembrance" in honor of my mother, Mary-Jo Daughtrey, who passed away one year ago today (1/1/2008) at the young age of 61. One of her favorite songs in church was "Let There Be Peace on Earth," which my sister and I were sure to include in her memorial service. As a way of honoring and remembering, I will be composing and posting a new variation on this beautiful song every day. Some will be quite short with minimal instrumentation while others will be longer with more in-depth scoring. Today, I am simply presenting the theme with the lyrics that are filled with hope and beauty.

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me;
Let there be peace on earth,
The peace that was meant to be.
With God as our Father
Brothers all are we,
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me,
Let this be the moment now;
With every step I take,
Let this be my solemn vow:
To take each moment and live each moment
In peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
